Why This Recipe Works

  • Fun Harry Potter Birthday Cake Idea.
  • Easy to make cupcake toppers.
  • They don't need to be perfect, the sorting hat is lumpy and rumpled anyway.

Ingredients you will need

To make the sorting hat cupcake toppers you actually only need 1 ingredient. Soft Caramels, I used the Werthers Originals Chewy Toffees. You will need 2 caramels to make each sorting hat cupcake topper

Ingredient Notes and Substitutes

These instructions are just to make the Harry Potter cupcake toppers. For everything to make harry potter cupcakes you will also need:

  • 12 x chocolate cupcakes
  • Chocolate buttercream
  • Red, blue, yellow and green buttercream or coloured candy such as M&Ms.

How to make Harry Potter Cupcake Toppers

Step one: Warm two caramel/toffee sweets in your hands

Step two: Roll the first toffee into a ball. Just like you would roll playdough into a ball.

An unwrapped toffee rolled into a ball.

Step three: Place this ball on a piece of nonstick baking paper. Flatten the ball with the palm of your hand to make a flat disk. This will be the brim of the sorting hat.

Step four: Roll the second toffee into a cone shape, squish it a little to make it look like the rumpled shape of the sorting hat.

Step five: Use a spoon to create a mouth and 2 eyes. Store the sorting hat cupcake toppers in an air tight container in a cool place. If you live in a hot climate keep them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them.

Step six: Press the rumpled cone onto the disk, you now have a basic sorting hat. Store the sorting hat cupcake toppers in an air tight container in a cool place. If you live in a hot climate keep them in the fridge until you are ready to serve them

Top Tips

Here is how you can make these Harry Potter Cupcakes perfectly every time!

Ok, I need to let you into a little secret, I was a little time-poor this year so didn't actually make the harry potter cupcakes myself, I just made the sorting hat cupcake toppers and popped them onto pre-maid cupcakes.

I outsourced the filled chocolate cupcake making to Spongedrop Cakery They regularly make filled cupcakes for baby sex announcements so were happy to make buttercream filled chocolate cupcakes for me in the colours of the Hogwarts houses.

You can, of course, make your own cupcakes, if you need a dairy-free cupcake recipe I have a great one on my website, for traditional chocolate cupcakes this recipe from Just a Mum is great.

Or alternatively, a packet cupcake will also be just fine too
