Zucchini Puree
Zucchini puree is a simple green vegetable baby food, which can be served as a first food on its own or combined with other purees.
Why This Recipe Works
- Quick to make
- Freezer friendly
- With its fibre and high water content, zucchini puree is known as a baby food that may help with constipation.
Ingredients you will need
To make zucchini puree you will just need zucchini (courgette) and a little water.
Choosing your zucchini
- Zucchini and courgette are the same vegetables, so depending on where you live they may be called either thing. They may also be known as baby marrows, as if you leave a zucchini or courgette to grow it will indeed become a marrow!
- Look for zucchini that are small to medium in size, around 15 cm -20 cm long. Of course, if your zucchini is bigger than that, it will still be fine. As zucchini grow towards marrow size they can become coarser in texture and less flavoursome.
- Look for zucchini that are firm, vibrant in colour and with no obvious knicks and soft spots.
- You may be able to feel small hairs on the zucchini skin, this is ok and indicative that the zucchini is very fresh.
How to make zucchini puree for baby
Below are illustrated step-by-step instructions to make my Zucchini Puree Recipe, if you prefer just the written instructions then head straight to the printable recipe card below.
Prep: Top and tail your zucchini, by this I mean remove the hard ends of the zucchini. Slice The zucchini.
Step one: Place the zucchini and water in a pot and heat until the water comes to a boil. Cover the saucepan with a lid and turn off the heat. Leave the zucchini to steam for 5-6 minutes before lifting the lid. The cooked zucchini should now be tender.
Drain the zucchini, reserving any liquid
Step two: Blend your zucchini until a smooth texture is achieved, add liquid as needed to reach your desired consistency. You can use either a blender or food processor for this step.
If you are blending the zucchini while still hot, be sure your blender/processor can be vented. Hot foods should not be blended in a sealed blender (like a bullet-style blender) as the pressure can build and cause an explosion. If you have a bullet-style blender allow the zucchini to cool before blending.
Enjoy!

Top Tips
Here is how you can make these zucchini puree perfectly every time!
- If you do not have a blender or a food processor a handheld stick blender will work as well.
- For the most vibrant green colour, once you have drained your steamed, dump it into a bowl of iced water. (I didn't include this as a step as I don't do this every time, but it does make for an even better-coloured puree.)
- There is no need to peel your zucchini, zucchini skin is thin and will blend well into a zucchini baby puree
- An alternative way to cook your zucchini is to steam your vegetables in the microwave
- For babies do not add salt
- Freeze leftover zucchini puree in ice cube trays so that you can use it easily in future meals and recipes.
- If desired you can add breast milk or infant formula to the zucchini baby puree.
