This year smoothies have been a massive hit on both my blog and my website, with one of my facebook videos for smoothies going totally viral, so it seems fitting I close the year with these layered Christmas smoothies

My kids love smoothies, I love them for sneaking in extra veggies and love them when we need something fast.

But although we enjoy them I do think we shouldn't rely on drinks as the only way to get our kiddos eating fresh fruit and veggies, when you blend them in a smoothie they can become quite a concentrated source of energy and it means their mouths aren't doing the first step of digestion, which is not just chewing but also exposing the food to an enzyme in our saliva that kicks starts digestion (salivary amylase)

But in saying all that we still love them, not always as fancy as these layered Christmas smoothies but yummy none the less!

If you are looking for ideas that have veggies in them, then these fruit and veggie smoothies combinations that kids will actually drink is worth checking out.

My other post on breakfast smoothies for kids also has some interesting ideas for adding protein and healthy fats.

Layered Christmas Smoothies Instructions

To create a layered smoothie there isn't really much to it, other than ensuring your smoothie blend has a thick texture. i.e. think a thick shake rather than a milkshake

The Red Layer

For this layer, I used a combination of watermelon, strawberries, and raspberries.

The White Layer

For this layer I used milk (you could use a milk alternative if needed) ripe bananas and cashews, I reserved half to make the base of the green layer. (cauliflower can be added to this layer to up the veggie content)

The cashews can be skipped if nut free is a requirement

The Green Layer

For this layer, I added frozen mango and spinach leaves to the remainder of the white layer mix

Layer them, top with fruit if you wish and boom you are done a festive layered Christmas smoothie.
