Pear puree has a lovely sweet flavour and makes creamy homemade baby food. Nutritious pears are rich in vitamin C, folate, and fiber including pre-biotics.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Simple first food for babies
  • Can be used to naturally sweeten other nutritious baby food recipes
  • Freezes and defrosts very well

Ingredients you will need

To make pear puree you will only need apples and a little water.

5 green pears on a white marble bench top.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutes

Ripe pears

  • Pear puree will be at its best if you start with ripe pears. The best way to tell if a pear is ripe is to press the pear with your thumb at its neck gently. (The neck is the part of the pear where the stem connects to the fruit.)
  • If your pears are not yet ripe leave them on the bench to ripen. Leaving them in a fruit bowl with bananas can also hasten the ripening, as bananas release a gas known as ethylene/ethene which ripens fruit.

Step-by-step instructions

Prep: Peel, core and slice your pears.

A stainless steel saucepan of peeled and sliced peers next to a chopping board with pear offcuts.

Step one: In a saucepan place your pears and water. Cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes until your pears are soft (able to be squashed with a fork).

Step two: Drain and reserve the liquid. I like to reserve the liquid as I prefer to make thicker spoonable purees.

A small bowl of pear liquid held above a blender jug of sliced pears.

Step three: Blend or process until a smooth texture is reached, add liquid as needed.

If you are blending the pears while still hot, be sure your blender/processor can be vented. Hot foods should not be blended in a sealed blender (like a bullet-style blender) as the pressure can build and cause an explosion.

Top Tips

Here is how you can make pureed pears perfectly every time!

  • If you are blending the pears while still hot, be sure your blender/processor can be vented. Hot foods should not be blended in a sealed blender (like a bullet-style blender) as the pressure can build and may cause an explosion.
  • Freeze leftover pear puree in ice cube trays so that you can use it easily in future meals and recipes.
  • If your pears are very ripe and juicey (already able to be squashed with a fork) you will be able to puree your pears without cooking them.
  • Pear skin is very thin, you can choose to puree your pears with their skin on, the final puree may not be quite as smooth, but will be nutritious and delicious.
  • Gritty texture: Don't panic if your pear puree is a little gritty in texture, this is the natural texture of pears and is fine to serve to your baby.
