Gluten Free Teriyaki Sauce

In this post I show you how easy it is to make gluten-free teriyaki sauce. Teriyaki sauce is one of my kid's favourite flavours. Typically store-bought teriyaki sauce contains gluten but not this version.

Ingredients you will need

To make my gluten-free teriyaki sauce you will need

  • tamari
  • water
  • brown sugar
  • sesame oil
  • rice vinegar
  • garlic powder
  • ground ginger
  • corn flour (gluten-free)

Ingredient Notes and Substitutes

  • Tamari: Is gluten-free soy sauce. If you don't need to have gluten-free teriyaki sauce you can just use regular soy sauce.
  • Brown sugar: I like the flavour the brown sugar adds, the recipe works equally well with white sugar, coconut sugar and maple syrup.
  • Rice vinegar: Rice vinegar and rice wine vinegar are the same things.
  • Corn flour (gluten-free): Arrowroot powder will also work.

Step one: Place all ingredients (excluding the corn flour and the second measure of water), whisk to combine and begin to heat

Step two: Whisk together the corn flour and water In a small bowl to create a slurry.

Step three: Add the corn flour slurry to the warmed teriyaki sauce, and heat until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens.

Step four: Remove from the heat, allow to cool and store in the fridge in an airtight jar.

Top Tips

Here is how you can make these gluten-free teriyaki sauce perfectly for your family every time!

Sweetness: I have discovered some teriyaki sauces are sweeter than others, and the sweetness you prefer will come down to personal preference. I find 3 tablespoons of sugar is perfect, but if you like it a little sweeter, you can taste and then stir in an extra spoonful of sugar while the sauce is still warm.

Ways to use your teriyaki sauce

  • Brush this teriyaki sauce on grilled meats, vegetables or tofu

Is teriyaki sauce gluten free?

Store bought teriyaki sauce is typically based on soy sauce which means it is not gluten-free. Teriyaki sauce can be made gluten free is Tamari is used as a base.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup tamari
