This vegan strawberry frosting is delicious and looks great. I'm not vegan, the reason I am building a collection of vegan birthday ideas on my website though is that I have a HUGE belief in inclusivity when it comes to kids' birthday parties.

Vegan recipes are dairy-free and egg-free which means they can be so useful when it comes to kids with allergies.

I am an ambassador for Countdown supermarket, they support my blog by providing ingredients for recipe creation and testing. I used strawberry jam and icing sugar from their range in this recipe.

Vegan Butter

I often see recipes calling for vegan butter. Vegan butter is in fact margarine. I live in New Zealand, at the moment I don't believe we actually have any products labeled vegan butter. If you are looking for a vegan alternative to use in baking or in something like this vegan frosting recipe just look for a full fat dairy-free margarine.

Do make sure that the margarine is full-fat. 'Light' margarine or 'fat-reduced' margarine have higher water content and do not perform well in baking (or at least not as a direct substitute for butter).

Also make sure the margarine you select is dairy-free, quite a few, although mainly based on vegetable oils can contain milk. I often use Nuttelex, but you may be able to find other brands that will also work.

Step by step instructions

  • In a medium bowl beat the one third of icing sugar and the strawberry jam until a smooth consistent paste forms
  • Add the vegan butter/margaine and beat
  • Add one third of the icing sugar, beat, scrape down the sides of the bowl if needed
  • Add the remaining third of the icing sugar and beat, you should now have a lovely vegan strawberry frosting.

Top Tips

There isn't too much that can go wrong with this recipe

  • Make sure the vegan butter / margarine you are using for this recipe is full fat. When you read the nutritional panel it should have at least 80g of fat per 100g of product
  • Try other jams to create other flavoured frostings! Raspberry and blackberry jam is delicious and a frosting made with apricot jam is amazing on fruit cake.
  • If your jam is not strongly coloured, you can add a drop of food colouring to make the colour more vibrant
