Ready to up your kiwifruit game? I'm here to show you how to cut kiwi with step by step instructions to four of the easiest ways with the least amount of wastage.

I live in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, affectionately known as the Kiwifruit capital of the world! I drive past kiwi fruit orchards everyday and serve my kids kiwi fruit all the time! So for me kiwi, or kiwifruit as we call them here are second nature.

Parts Of A Kiwi

I just wanted to start by naming some of the parts of a kiwi and identifying what is and isn't edible.

A kiwifruit is an egg shaped fruit with two distinct ends. The pedicel end of the kiwi is where the fruit is attached to the vine by a stem. The stigmas end is the remnants of the flower and can almost have a 'fluffy appearance.

I point out the two ends, because inside the fruit at the pedicel there is a hard almost 'toothpick' like stick, that I believe is always best to remove as it is not nice to bite into.

  • Pedicel: Hard and is best removed.
  • Stigmas: Edible
  • Peel: The peel of the kiwifruit is once washed edible. Some people don't like the texture of the skin as it can be rough/fluffy. The green variety is more rough than the gold or red kiwis which have quite smooth skins.
  • Core: Edible
  • Seeds: Edible
  • Flesh: Edible

Kiwi Lunch Box Classic

This is the classic way to serve kiwifruit. Cut and half, ready to be scooped out with a spoon. When I was little this was how I took kiwi to school in my lunchbox every day.

How to ZigZag Cut A Kiwi

The zigzag cut or star cut is one of the fancier ways to cut a kiwi. You will often see kiwi fruit cut this way on a fruit platter or in bento boxes on instagram. It is actually not hard to do and can take your kiwi fruit game to the next level.

  1. Reverse the angle of your knife then push the point into the kiwifruit again so that you are making a shark tooth or triangle pattern around the kiwifruit.

How to Cut Kiwi Wedges

Personally I think this is one of the easiest and best ways to cut then serve kiwi fruit.

The end of the kiwi fruit being removed with a small sharp knife.
  1. Remove the pedicel or stem end of the kiwi. This is the end that's the hard wooden stem in it.
A green kiwi with one end removed cut lengthways into quarters.
  1. Cut the kiwifruit into quarters lengthwise, so that you end up with kiwi wedges.

You will now be able to eat it like you would an orange wedge. You will be able to bite into the kiwi wedge and eat the flesh just leaving the skin.

How to Peel Kiwi With Spoon

While you can obviously remove the skin of a kiwi fruit with a sharp knife. Another easy way to remove the skin is to use a dessert spoon.
